Facts about the Norway Rat

In case you didn’t know, the Norway Rat goes by many names including brown rat, gray rat, wharf rat, sewer rat, and water rat. This particular rat is found all over the United States and it is known to be large and aggressive. The Norway Rat can grow to be about eight inches long and can weigh about 16 ounces. It is known for its shaggy fur and short tail and one easy way to tell the difference between a Norway Rat and a Roof Rat is to pull the tail over the body as the tail of a Norway Rat is shorter and cannot reach its head.
The Norway Rat eats a variety of food items that are common in households such as grains, meats, fruits, and livestock feed but if eating dry foods, they require a daily intake of water for survival (unlike mice). They also can kill smaller mammals and insects for food.

Territories and nests of the Norway Rat consists of underground tunnels outside in yards or inside buildings where some have been known to live out their entire lives. Usually they sneak into homes during the night and look for food that can be taken back to their nests. When found inside, it is usually in attics, basements, and crawl spaces.

Norway Rat droppings are one sign on a Norway Rat infestation. Usually, their droppings are shiny black, half-inch in length, and have blunt ends (unlike the pointed ends from Roof Rat droppings). Remember that these rats are most active during night and their population is usually large so if you suspect an infestation, detecting their activity during the night shouldn’t be too difficult.
